In 1976, Sacred Heart of Jesus Preschool was founded by Mrs. Victoria B. Neri, then the schools classroom teacher. The school opened with 60 pupils inside a two-classroom building. The school continued to grow and two additional classrooms were built to accommodate more enrollees. Four years later, in 1980, Mrs. Victoria B. Neri, the School Directress of the institution enrolled in the National Montessori Proficiency training offered at Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center in Greenhills, Metro Manila during these summer of 1980 to 1982. After Mrs. Neri completed the course, Mrs. Preciosa S. Soliven, the President and Managing Directress of O.B. Montessori Center visited the institution and approved the Pre-school in compliance with the Montessori standards. Consequently on September 25, 1982, the school was launched as the first and only genuine Montessori School in Cagayan de Oro City. A year later the school was renamed Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School in Cagayan de Oro City.

A year later the school was renamed Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School and gained DECs full recognition for Pre-school. During the smmer of 1984 and 1985, Mrs. Agnes B. Tacastacas (nee Agnes Bana) took the Montessori training at OB Montessori Center in Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila. The parents encouraged the administration to open elementary school, thus gradual implementation started in 1982 and the DECS granted its recognition of the school complete elementary course in 1986. As a result, a three storey building was constructed for its increasing enrollment. In 1987, the High School Department started and gained full DECS recognition in August 1990. In 1992, DECS awarded SHJMS as one of the top five excellent schools in Cagayan de Oro City. Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School paved its way to an expansion development program. Thus, the High School Department was relocated to a new site in Capistrano Complex, Gusa in 1995. A four-storey building was constructed on an almost a hectare lot, accommodating more than 500 high school students. The school has continued to grow, as evidenced by the opening of high school in Claro M. Recto in school year 2000-2001, Casa and Elementary classes in Gusa and simultaneously Casa classes in Iponan, in 2001. To equip more of Montessori education, training of teachers has been an on-going program of the school. This included annual in-house Montessori Education training for all teachers and special training to Montessori Education Institute. Mrs. Ann Neri enrolled in the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary Training Course on April 16 to May 25, 2001 – a first summer training sponsored by TMI-Denver-Co., USA in cooperation with FAMEP, Manila, Philippines. In quest for academic excellence, and to meet the Association Montessori Internationale Standard, Mrs. Victoria B. Neri has pursued the Montessori education through a correspondence school at the Saint Nicholas Montessori training center in London, England. She ahs also observed and visited Montessori Schools when she traveled in USA in 1990 and 1992 and Europe in 1997. Her diligence and conscientious efforts did not stop there for Mrs. Victoria B. Neri enrolled in a Montessori Teacher Training Course in Montessori Institute of Milwaukee Incorporated at Milwaukee, USA for the period July 2003-June 2004. In 2003, the school was recognized as a Catholic School and consequently became a member of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP). It is then the desire of the SHJMS community to grow with time in order to fulfill its mission and philosophy, that truly “EDUCATION IS AN AID TO LIFE.”
